CURB REPORTER Mrs. D. H. Williams, who was 94 on Tuesday will leave soon for New York where she will spend the summer. Mjrs. Williams was born in Asheville in 1845 and was the daughter of a French hugenot named Garenflo. She came to Tryon in 1893 to operate the Tryon City Hotel. She didn’t like the name so she changed it to Oak Hall hotel and it has been that ever since. The hotel then was a center of entertainment for win ter guests and summer visitors. Plays and concerts were given in the dining room as there was no theatre or auditorium for such per formances. The same type of peo ple that come to Tryon now came then, but they had to come to Tryon by train, and when they took in the mountain scenery they rode horseback or in buggies. Water for the hotel was furnished by a 60-ft well located just above the rock building opposite the de pot and it was some job to draw enough water for the guests. There were fireplaces in every room in stead of a central heating plant. Mrs. Williams imported the first hard coal into the community and ice had to be shipped in from Spartanburg. There were no water connections so so the Chick Siales houses were located away from the hotel. The depot was at the foot of the bank opposite the pres ent post office. Although 94 years of age Mrs. Williams is actively interested in everything going on and has her own flower garden which she takes care of. The spirit of independence, preferring to live alone in her own house, and full of youthful fun has kept her alive and interested in the world.
