C., WED., JUNE 14, 1939 Polk County 4-H Health Champions I r Hats off to the Health King and Queen of Polk county Lorena Cochran and Howard Greene. It seems that Dr. Whims and Miss Clarke of the Health Department, did a good job of selecting the con testants because Miss Cochran with an almost perfect score of 98 was second in the district health contest at Gastonia by only one point. Miss Cochran, the Health Queen, is from the Stearns high school with Enola Ormand from the same school runner up. Mr. Green is from Green Creek school and had an excellent score of 94. Get 4 Per Cent Checks totaling $2,813.69 have been mailed to investors in the kTryon Federal Savings & Loan f. Association. At a recent meeting of the directors of the association they declared a 4 per cent semi annual dividend payable on June noth. Secretary-Treasurer M. R. M'cCown states that the jgrowth of the local savings and loan asso ciation is very gratifying. That it is meeting a great need in this section where new homes are need ed and at the same time furnishes a reliable medium for investors who can get the highest rate of dividend with federal insurance protection. The growth of the local financial institution has gone forward each month since it was ; established. The regular monthly statement is published elsewhere in this issue of the Bulletin. CURB REPORTER Chester Howes was not at the Tryon Kiwanis club meeting on Tuesday. He was celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary and he cn 1 Mrs. Howes took a trip to neighboring communities according to a news item elsewhere in this paper. Chester is 81 years young. He is a pioneer in that he came to Tryon 44 years ago and he is a pioneer in being among the first to co-operate in new things for the good of the community. He is a charter member of the Tryon Kiwanis club and takes his place along with the younger members 60 years his junior. Last week when the Rotarians and Kiwan ians played baseball he reported for duty in the field and took his turn at bat. He drove the ball into the infield but was thrown out at first base, but he hit the ball. Now he is not just a play boy. There never was a man more serious, more conscientious, more industrious, more faithful to duty, nor more loyal to his friends and principles. He believes that we should render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto the God the things that are God’s; and that there is a time for work and a time for play. He has lived a well-balanced life mixing his work and play within the , bounds of reason. He works on his farm every day except when Continued on Back Page
