C., FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 1939 Merchants Meet Today m A meeting of Tryon merchants |P"Vill be held this afternoon at 3 Aclock at Missildine’s Hall for the purpose of discussing the closing of stores on Thursday afternoons during the summer. Headlines The Japanese and British are still passing notes to each other. Britain tells Japan to quit search ing British ships and British per sons and remove the blocade on the British concession in Tientsin. Ja pan says you stop helping Chiang Kai-shek. Japs say they will con tinue to rule in the East. Senator Barbour finds foreign spies are covering the United States. J. Edgar Hoover is in creasing the government’s secret agents in Pacific Coast sections. Jim Farley says Democratic party can run' on its own record achievement. He says Republi \_jßns have two courses to follow: endorse New Deal or follow Her bert Hoover. Attroney General Murphy wants to cut billion dollars off federal officers payroll. King George and Queen Eiza heth sailed Thursday from Hali fax, Nova Scotia. 150,000 people waved them goodbye. Asheville is nreoaring for its r nnual Rhododendron Festival. June 18th to 24th. Th" l Episcopal Auxiliary opened at Kanuga Lake on Thursday morning. The United States has received only 80c for each SIO,OOO of the war debt due us. Vegetable Refrigerator At Andrews & Swann The page advertisement in to day’s issue of the Bulletin praises the merits of the new meat refrig erator counter just installed at Andrews & Swann, but it failed to mention a new electric refrigerator show case for the display of fresh vegetables which are kept garden fresh all the time until delivered to the customer. The new eoun ter will enable the store to carry a larger variety of fresh vege tables the year ’round. Rotary Wins Again Tryon Rotayians defeated the Kiwanians 19-15 in a softball game on Thursday afternoon at Harmon Field. The battery for Rotary consisted of Blois and Armfield; for Kiwanis Brady and Butler. A large crowd turned out to see three games. Just before the Ki wanis-Rotary game the Adams- Millis players had a game and following the civic club game a group from the Ballenger-Jack son team and others had a game. Big Barbecue A large number of friends, and public officials enjoyed the hos pitality of C. J. Lynch on Thurs day evening at 6:30 at Harmon Field when he served a barbecue meal with all the fixings, includ ing cornbread, slaw, tomatoes, cu cumbers, rice, gravy, ’taters, coffee. Dr. Derby’s band furnished the music and the spirit of fellowship prevailed with song and dancing, and minstrel fun.
