Est 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 1939 Miss Maude Coxe p»Dies Following Lengthy Illness Following a long illness, Miss Maude Coxe, 66, member of a prominent Western North Carolina family, died at the family’s plan tation, “Green River”, in Polk county yesterday morning. Funeral services will be conduct ed at 10 o’clock Saturday morn ing at St. Francis Episcopal church of which Miss Coxe was a member. Miss Coxe was the daughter of the late Frank Coxe and a sister of the late Tench Coxe. Colonel Coxe was the builder of the fa mous Battery Park hotel, which was torn down about 16 years ago to make way for the present Battery Park hotel. He also was )the developer of other business property here Coxe avenue is named for him. Miss Coxe had been in failing health for several months and her death was not unexpected. Dr. William Stroud, heart specialist of Philadelphia, was summoned to the Coxe plantation yesterday, but he found Miss Coxe’s . condition hopeless. Dr. Stroud made the trip from Philadelphia to Spar tanburg by airplane, and from Spartanburg to ‘“Green River” by motor. Surviving Miss Coxe are one sister. Mrs. Daisy Coxe (William T.) Wright of Philadelphia, and several nieces and nephews, in cluding Miss Eliza Coxe, Miss Mary Coxe, Frank Coxe, Tench Coxe and William F. P. Coxe, all of Asheville. Falls Under Thresher K. G. Settles of Landrum route 2, is in St. Luke’s hospital for treatment of injuries received when he fell from a moving threshing machine on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Settles was sitting on a plank which broke and caused him to fall under the moving wheels of the machine which was being pulled by a tractor. His in juries are thought not to be serious. Baseball Saturday Regular baseball between Adams- Miillis and Tucapau will be played on Saturday afternoon at Harmon Field at 3:15. This is expected to be one of the best games of the season. The local team defeated Mayfair, 6-2 on Wednesday at Arcadia. Kiwanis-Rotary Game This Afternoon Rotary and Kiwanis will play their third softball game of the season this afternoon at 6:30 at Harmon Field. Rotary has won the two games played, but Ki wan:s is being strengthened this week by the addition of Carroll P. Rogers, who has returned from the World’s Fair. HOLIDAY TODAY With 22 places of business clos ing for Thursday afternoons dur ing the summer, Trade street will put on the atmosphere of a real holiday. The bank, post office and most mercantile establishments have signed to close and big times are being planned.
