Hendersonville Horse
Show Opens Today
Hendersonville, July 26. The
our t h annual Hendersonville
Horse Show, among the top-rank
ing attractions of the summer
season in Western North Carolina,
will begin its first performance
at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
Thursday night, Friday afternoon,
and Friday night performances
will follow.
Last year’s record attendance at
the four performances of 7,000
persons is expected to be surpass
ed this week, indications being that
the 1939 event will be the most
successful yet held.
“Everything points to the big
gest and best show we have ever
had here,” H. B. Kelly, of Hen
dersonville and Tryon, % general
manager of the event, said Wed
nesday.
Some of the finest horses in this
section of the country will be seen
the ring during the two-day
fflkent. Among them will be sever-
al animals recently purchased by
Greenville, S. C., parties that have
never been shown in the South
before.
The show again carries a North
Carolina summer camp horseman
ship championship and some of
the finest camp riders will be seen
in action. In addition, some of
the South’s leading child riders
are exhibiting their own horses
in the show.
Prize money this year is above
SI,OOO and there will be above 160
individual entries, more than ever
before. The number of classes,
46. is also larger than for previous

Capt. Cherry Has Stroke
Capt. G. J. Cherry of Tryon and
Charleston suffered a stroke a
few days ago and is in a critical
condition, according to a letter to
C. J. Lynch from his secretary,
received Wednesday morning. Capt.
and MTs. Cherry had ordered their
house on Melrose Avenue to be
open and made ready for them
this week.
Large Still Destroyed
Deputy Sheriffs Scoggins and
Melton yesterday destroyed a
large steamer-type distillery in the
Mountain Page vicinity. The out
fit was not in operation at the
time, and no arrests were made
in connection with it.
At 10 A. M. Friday
The Tryon Boys’ club will hold
their finals to which the public
is invited. The principal speech
will be made by W. P. Jackson,
former field secretary of the Na
tional Recreation Assocation. Oth
er talks by Dr. G. F. Taylor, J.
N. Jackson, Sr., W. A. Schilletter
and Holland Brady, Jr. Cups will
be awarded two outstanding boys.
The clilb has been divided into fiVe
groups and the group winning the
most points in achievement, atten
dance, etc., will be awarded a
shield on which the names of all
the boys will be inscribed. All
visitors welcome.
