Big Convention
Atlanta, Georgia.
Nearly 50 years ago when trans
portation and communication were
so poor, my brother walked to
Polkville in Cleveland county. He
wrote back home after this wise:
"I am away down here 25 miles
below Rutherfordton and don’t
know when I will see you all any
more.*
So I am away down here at
Atlanta, 200 mil£s from home and
don’t know when I will see you
any more.
At this Baptist World Alliance
meeting I am like William Wilson
was when he attended a Republican
convention in Charlotte. He said
he decided the whole state was
composed of Republicans.
So I feel like the whole world
is Baptist. A Baptist minister
was reminded by his (deacons that
he was to preach at least one
sermon without mentioning Bap
tism. So he took his text in
Genesis, where it said: “The Lord
created the heavens and the earth*
and he turned aside to say that
geography tells us that about %
of the world’s surface is water
and that if the Lord hadn’t been
a Baptist he would not have creat
ed so much water. With this
throng of Baptists about 50,000
strong, I can almost imagine I
see the River Jordan flowing
through the great city of Atlanta.
I am getting some information,
more inspiration, perspiration in
the superlative degree.
Well this is a great meeting.
There were about 40,000 passed
through the gates of the ball
nark, into that vast stadium to
hear Dr. Truett deliver his presi
dential address.
Coming in contact with people
from six continents and about 60
nations makes a fellow feel that
after all the whole world is com
posed of one common brotherhood,
or at least should be.
