Finished on first green. Nelson Jackson, Jr.: score 81; handicap 8; net 73. Finished six inches from 18th cup. Birch Arledge: score 86; handi cap 12; net 74. Finished six feet from 18th cup. George Brannon: score 101; handicap 29; net 71. Finished 10 feet from 18th cup. ONE VARIETY COTTON ASSOCIATION GROWS Since the organization of the One Variety Cotton Association of Polk County the membership has grown from 90 members to 176. his list of farms includes a ma jority of the best farmers in the county. Wiith these good farmers and the ginners and buyers all boosting the One Variety Coker 100 it is expected that practically all cotton grown next year will be of the accepted variety. N. C. Turkeys Get Reprieve Press announcements from Ral eigh stated this morning that Gov. Clyde R. Hoey will not decree a change in the date for Thanksgiv ing for North Carolina. In reply to President Roosevelt's sugges tion that Thanksgiving be celebrat ed one week earlier Governor Hoey issued the following statement: “The reasons for a change are not impressive. For 75 years, the Continued on Back Page Tryon District Schools Open Monday, Sept. 4 The Tryon District schools will open for the 1939-40 session promptly at nine o’clock a. m., on Monday, September 4. On this day all pupils are requested to re port to their respective class rooms. They will march from there to the auditorium for a short opening exercise. After the program the pupils will march to their class rooms to receive a schedule of work, book list, lesson assignments and other necessary assignments. All pupils entering these schools for the first time, except First grade pupils, are asked to please register at the superintendent’s office for classification on Friday morning, Setpember Ist, from 10 to 12 o’clock. The State of North Carolina will furnish free textbooks for elemen tary grade pupils. Each child in the elementary school will be re quested to pay a small fee for the purpose of renting supplementary readers, buying note books and other necessary materials that are not furnished bv the State.
