W. T. Hammett Is
Named Fiscal Agent
Town of Columbus
Federal Judge E. Yates Webb
Saturday appointed W. T. Ham
mett as fiscal agent for the town
of Columbus in Polk county. Wil
liam Pabodie will continue as re
ceiver for the town’s water de
partment
Mr. Hammett, mayor of Colum
bus 12 years ago, was named as
the town’s fiscal agent upon re
quest of the town’s governing
board. The town officials, headed
by Mayor John L. Burgess and
Attorney E. B. Cloud, requested
the court last week to name some
one to handle the tax collections.
Mr. Pabodie had been acting as
town fiscal agent and receiver for
the water department for several
months under court orders. The
town council protested against his
alleged “dictatorial methods,” and
said that the cost of collecting
taxes was too expensive.
He was appointed as fiscal agent
and receiver several months ago
after creditors had petitioned for
the receivership. Both Mr. Ham
mett and Mr. Pabodie will serve
in their new capacities under court
orders —Asheville Citizen.®
