Our London Letter

As you will see from the address
I am staying with Virginia Thesi
ger and she has asked me to write
the London Letter this time as she
is so busy driving for the Women's
Voluntary Service. The war has
found us all living lives quite
strange compared to our former
gentle existences. There she is,
constantly at the wheel, while I
have been performing in the little
Revue three times a day NON
STOP! Thank goodness this kill
ing arrangement has now been
abandoned and from today we are
giving only two shows a day—2:3o
and 8:30. Whether we’ll get au
diences-at night remains to be seen.
It takes a more and determined
being to face the trials of our very
complete London blackout. At last
the authorities have allowed us to
' y carry torches—so long as we don’t
flash them about but keep them
directly pointed downwards. I’ve
got. a magnifioant one made of
solid rubber that can’t break if it
falls and can equally well be used
as a defence weapon as well as a
light if a foot pad should start
any funnv tricks in an attempt
to get hold of my worthless hand
bag.
I am staying here because
travelling at night has become too
difficult. The trains are equipped
with a single useless blue bulb to
each compartment and the shortest
journey is unbelievably tedious.
And then when you get to your
county station it’s impossible to

Women of Diocese t
Met Here Tuesday *
The fall semi-annual mooting ,-asp
the Second District of the Woman’s
Auxiliary of the Episcopal "Diocese
of Western North Carolina war
held the morning of October 31,
at the Church of the Holy Cross
in Tryon.
The seven churches in the Dis
trict were represented; including
officers of the Woman’s Auxiliary
and several clergymen. Approxi
mately 75 persons were in attend
ance.
The program was opened with
Holy Communion celebrated by the
Rt. Rev. Robert E. Gribbin assist
ed by the Rev. Charles L. Me-
Gavern.

ed the guests, after which talks
were given by Mrs. Howard G.
Etheridge, president of the Wo
man's Auxiliary of the Diocese of
Western North Carolina; Mlrs. F.
W. Thomas of the National Ex
ecutive Board; Mlrs. Sheldon Lea
vitt, chairman of Christian Edu
cation: Mlrs. W. H. Wagner, Unit
ed Thank Offering treasurer; Mrs.
E. L. Glenn, chairman of Christian
Social Relations, and the Rev. Mr.
Butt from Valle Crucis.
The Rev. Mr. Saylor of Bat Cave
conducted the noonday prayers.
The Rev. Mr. James P. Burke
of Hendersonville delivered an in
teresting address on the Church’s
Program, emphasizing the impor
tance of reaching beyond organiza
tion and placing greater impor
tance on the Spiritual life.
Luncheon was served in the
Parish House by St. Agnes Guild
and the Woman’s Auxiliary.
