C., WEDNESDAY, NOV. 8, 1939 Mr. Sewall Says: The Annual Roll Call of the : American Red Cross will be held in the United States during the! period from November 11 to Nov-1 *ynber 30. A million new members, I addition to the 5,700,000 who | enrolled in 1938, will arm the Red . Cross to meet the emergencies of of the new year. In 1938-39 there were .139 major disasters in this country, in which the Red Cross gave help to more than 100,000 persons, with an expenditure of $2,605,000. Other aid rendered to persons in distress raised the total spent in this country to $6,615,000. The Polk County Chapter has been loyally supported during the years past, and hopes to do its part again this year, by a large en rollment. Here Next Wednesday In Tryon, the Roll Call Commit tee, pf which the Rev. Charles G. Sewall is the chairman, will acti vely solicit memberships on Wed nesday, November 15, hoping to *'■ most of those in the city Jk. Tryon who wish to enroll, but an opportunity will be given, at any time during the period of the Roll Call, for all persons in the j county who wish to have a part in this wonderful humanitarian work, to enroll themselves. ! Polk County Committee The Roll Call Committee is com posed of the following: Mrs. E. C. Andrews, Miss Jane Barbour, Douglas Blois, Mrs. George Brannon, Miss Marjorie Capps, Mr. and Mrs. George Cathey, G. W. Comer, Mrs. W. A. Dobbyn, Mrs. Robert Erskine, Miss Mima Fassett, Miss Minnie Lee Continued on Back Pagv H. Lyles Carpenter i Chosen Mayor of | Landrum, S. C. In the Town of Landrum election ! on Tuesday, H. L. Carpenter was i elected mayor in a three-candidate race for that office with 86 votes. Roland L. Lee polled 71 for second high with J. ML Ashmore running in third place. Frank Lambright, incumbent mayor, was chosen as an alderman along with R. L. Broome, Oscar Brady, A. J. Mitchell. They were elected without opposition. Brady and Mitchell having already serv ed four years as aldermen. Aider man W. S. Heavner did not offer himself for re-election. Tabulation for alderman showed Brady and Mitchell each received a total of 164 votes, while Broome and Lambright each polled 163. In the race for water commis sioner A. B. Turner, who has been the commissioner for six years, was re-elected, over three oppon ents, J. E. Ballew, L. L. Hill and Joe Hutchinson. Final Football Game On Friday, Nov. 10th The final footblal game of the season will be plaved on Friday, Nov. 10, when Valley Springs comes to Harmon Field. Every thing possible is being done to get the largest crowd out to boost the local team to victory. The time has been changed to three o’clock in order that the spectators might get home earlier.
