Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., FRIDAY, JAN. 6, 1940 Birthday Party At The Lanier Club (By Miabel Howell) , The long-heralded anniversary of the Lanier club took place Thursday afternoon at the library and was a memorable affair. The President Mfiss Helen Roberts, who presided, had with the help of a former president, Mrs. George Morton, compiled a brief, but most interesting history of the club. The address which followed, given by Dr. H. N. Snyder of Wofford col lege, gave many people new light on the life and character of the great poet, Sydney Lanier. The reception centei’ed around the table in the Holden reading room, covered with a lace cloth over gold and holding two large birthday cakes at each end. Candies and flowers emphasized the golden anniversary idea. Mrs. John Orr, Mrs. C. ML Howes and Mrs. George Morton started the refreshment \ball rolling by cutting each a slice the beautiful cakes. Mrs. Schuy ler Hamilton and Miss Annie Ravenel presided over the refresh ments. Miss Helen Roberts was assisted in receiving by former presidents of the club, Mirs. George Morton, Mrs. E. E. Missildine, Mrs. George Hamilton Holmes, MVs. Anne Bosworth Greene, Mrs. Car roll Rogers and Mrs. Harkness Smith. The president announced a beau tiful gift by Mirs. George Miller in memory of her husband. The gift is one of the imcomparable paintings of the Tryon hills by Mr. Lawrence Mazzanovich, and Continued on Back Page Bowl Games Are Showing At Tryon Theatre A good example of the fast life the world is living was seen on Thursday night when motion pic tures were shown at Tryon Theatre of the Rose Bowl football game played at Pasadena, Calif., on New Year’s Day. This game between Tennessee and Southern California was heard on the radio Monday night. The motion picture films were then rushed to New York by airplane where they were developed and on to Tryon by Thursday af ternoon’s 4:30 train. They will be shown again tonight together with the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl games. People in Tryon can enjoy the highlights of all these games with the better vision, better understanding and more comfort and at less expense than the eyewitnesses at any one of the games. Jack Kimberly Buys Old Morgan Place John R. Kimberly, M, F. H., of Tryon and Neenah, Wis., has pur chased the old Morgan home place and a large tract of land near Mor gan’s Chapel, from H. P. Sharpe and wife, Marv E. Sharp. The sale was made through C. J. Lynch. The trade had been underway for sometime but was not completed until this week. Mr. Kimberly, who is the Master of Hounds and a leader in the Tryon Riding & Hunt club activities plans to make ex tensive improvements on his newly acquired property which joins the recently built kennels on the Mor gan Chapel road. Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe will remain on the property as caretakers.
