Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., WEDNESDAY, JAN. 10, 1940 Silver Beaver Award To Be Presented For Distinguished Service S W. K. Mauney of King Moun tain, and H. Gilmer Winget, of Gastonia, will receive the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to boyhood for the year 1939 and presentation of these awards will be made at the annual meeting and banquet of the Pied mont Council, Boy Scouts of Ameri ca, on Tuesday night, January 16, at Gastonia. The Silver Beaver Award is a national recognition granted by the Boy Scouts of . America upon the recommendation of the local Boy Scout Council, two such awards are allotted each year to the eleven counties of the Pied mont Council. W. K. Mauney has been associ ated in the work of the Piedmont Council since 1924 and has served his local community and the coun t'll in various leadership capaci ties. He is now chairman of the Things Mountain District which leads the eleven counties in the number of Slcout Troops on a popu lation basis, and is chairman of the Council Committee on Organi zation and Extension. H. G. Winget has been associa ted in Scouting since 1928 ‘and has an outstanding record in serv ing boyhood. He is a member of the Troop Committee of Troop 16, Gastonia, and has served the Gastonia Court of Honor for the i-mst 12 years, serving as the Judge of the Court since 1933. He Continued on Back Page Hunt Club Meets Tonight At 8:15 The annual meeting of the Try on Riding and Hunt Club will be held tonight at 8:15 at Oak Hall Hotel. President Carter P. Brown is eager for all members to be pre sent for discussion of plans for the spring season. Dr. Edsall to Address Medical Society Dr. David L. Edsall, former dean of Harvard Medical school, will address the Thermal Belt Medical society at its meeting in Forest City on Thursday, January 18th at 7 p. m., according to an an nouncement by H. C. Thompson of Shelby, secretary of the association. Basketball Tonight The Adams-M’llici boys and girls basketball teams will play Con verse mill boys and girls teams tonight at the Tryon Gymnasium starting with the girls game at 7:15. The boys game will follow immediately. The contest between the teams tonight is expected to be close and the local teams lost last year only one or two points. Washington, Jan. 9.—The house heard its only negro member, Rep resentative Mitchell (D., 111.) hotly charge the Republican party today with “trying to buy back the negro vote” with the pending anti lynching bill.
