unemployment agency to have a
representative in Tryon at the old
Town Hall every Thursday noon

Help for the Underprivileged
In Polk County
The Polk County Council of So
cial Agencies is making a strong
appeal for funds with which to
finarce the vitally important work
of the Polk County Unit of the
American Women’s Hospitals and
that of the Help ng Hand. Both
are organizations wholly suppo t
ed bv individua 1 gifts. The Ame~i
can Women’s Hospitals, entirely
independent of St. Luke’s Hos
pital and engaged in a work St.
Lukes’ cannot undertake, supple
ments the work of the Polk
County Department of Public
Health by conducting from five to
eight prenatal and postnatal climes
per month for mothers unable to
afford private medical and nursing
service. For the convenience of
these needy mothers the clinics
are held in three different places,
namely St. Luke’s Hospital, Tryon;
the Katharine Beatson Health
House, Mill Spring; and the Com
munity House, Cooper’s Gap.
The medical director, Dr. John
Z. Preston, is assisted in these
clinics by three public health
nurses employed by the Depart
ment of Public Health who also
visit homes and supply needed
medicine and articles furnished
by the American Women’s Hos
pitals. In addition to this mater
nal service, Dr. Preston assisted
by Miss Irene Clark, public health
nurse, also conducts venereal
disease clinics. Approximately
1,000 consultations were given in
the clinics in 1939. Without this
maternal service contributed by the
Ame"ir"r Women’s Hospitals many
mothers and children would be in
