C., WEDNESDAY, FEB. 7, 1940 Tryon High Defeats Stearns High 24 to 9 The Tryon high boys chalked up win last night at the Co lumbus gym when they downed the Stearns high quintet by a one sided score. The quick breaking offensive of the Tryon team started clicking at the beginning and by the half had run up 12 points to their opponents 2. In the third quarter, the Columbus team put up their best effort and held Try on down, but weakened in the last period. The entire local squad played good ball with the scoring being evenly divided, Tavlor lead ing with six points, followed by McFarland and Vining with five each. For Steams high, Hines was the outstanding man. Summary of game: Tryon (24) McFarland 5; Cooksey 2; Beatson, D. 4; Beat- E. 0; Vining 5; Jackson 0; P/Jaylor 6; Ford 0; Melton 0 ; Chap ~“man 2. The next game on the local schedule will be with the strong Central high team of Rutherford ton, which is the only team that has downed the Tryon quintet this season. The game will be played at the Tryon gym on Thursday night at 7:30. Spectators are urged to come out and see this game and help win the contest. Contributors To Florida Mayors’ Tour Expenses The following business men have contributed to the expenses of the Tryon Representatives selectd to make the trip on the Western North Carolina Mayors’ Tour of Florida which starts on Tuesday, February 13th, and lasts until Saturday: E. Brintnall, Tom Costa, W. S. Green, Tryon Bank & Trust Co., Tryon Chamber of Commerce. TRYON ON ROUTE OF MAYORS’ FLA. TOUR President K. A. Bowen of the Tryon Chamber of Commerce stated today that information had been received from Tour Director J. E. Coad of Hickorv giving a schedule of the tour of Florida to be made by the mayors and chamber of commerce representatives of Wes tern North Carolina. There will be two large buses, one leaving Asheville and one leaving Char lotte. The Asheville bus carrying the renresentatives of Henderson ville, Highlands, Asheville, Way nesville and other towns in that section will come through Tryon on Tuesdav morning about 9:30 and will pick up the Tryon rep resentatives. The Charlotte bus will go through Columbia and join the Asheville bus at 1 o’clock at Augusta. J. M. Baker will be in charge of the Tryon Rotary club urogram on Fridav at 1 p. m., at Sunnvdale.
