Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., WEDNESDAY, FEB. 28, 1940 Landrum Residents Figure In Wrecks Slippery highways, poor visibi- JJity was blamed for two accidents '"Tuesday night on Highway 176 below Campobello. In the first ac cident, Hugh Brady and Billy Lad shaw of Landrum escaped serious injuries when their auto skidded on the wet pavement and over turned into a ditch below Gram ling. Within a few minutes and only a half-mile above the scene of this wreck, the J. F. Cantrell truck operated by Russell Cantrell, was sideswiped and wrecked by a Ford occupied by several negroes. After colliding with the truck, the Ford swerved directly into the path of a light coupe occupied by Broadus Whitlock and Wesley Mosely of Campobello. All three of the vehicles were demolished, and both Mosely and Whitlock re ceived severe injuries. The negroes *- disappeared immediately after the cident, and had not been located investigating officers several hours after the collisions. Reservations Made For Horse & Hound Show E. B. Hale, prominent horseman of Morristown, Tenn., has made reservations for five stalls at the Tryon Horse & Hound Show to be held on April 17th, according to Sam Bingham, Jr., secretary of the show. Mr. Hale has won two legs on the Biltmore Forest Cun offered at the local show. The third win will give him permanent possession of the cup. CIVIC MEETING ON FRIDAY AT SUNNYDALE The Tryon Chamber of Cctfn merce, Rotary Club and Kiwanis Club and others interested in Tnron and Polk County will hold a joint meeting on Friday at 1 p. m., at Sunnydale Log Cabin. A report of the Tryon representatives on the Mlayors’ Tour of Florida will be heard, and comments by others, ac cording to plans made today by the directors of the Chamber of Com merce. Anyone bringing guests should notify Ernest Kerhulas, manager of Shnnydale or the sec retaries of organizations represent ed. Brady Elected President St. Luke’s Hospital Assn. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the St. Luke’s Hos pital Association, held on Tuesday evening at the home of MTss Mae Irene Flentye, R. H. Brady was elected president to succeed J. T. Arledge. Other officers elected were Seth M. Vining, vice-presi dent; Volney T. Barnette, secre tary; B. L. Ballenger, treasurer. Sunday, M*arch 17th, was the date set for the annual solicitation of funds with whLh to care for the poor patents and to help maintain the hospital. San Francisco, Feb. 27.—Water ways, turned to torrents by cloud bursts and melting snow, drove as many as 3,000 perrons from their homes today in a score or more northern California cit’es. Almost nine inches of rain fe'l in 24 hours at several points.
