Better Things Result From
Clean-Up Week
Better health, better business,
& better thoughts are among the pos
sible benefits-to Tryon as results
of a successful Clean-Up Week,
according to the slogan chosen by
the Tryon Garden Club, to be shown
on the screen of Tryon Theatre
during the week of April 1 to 6.
That is the date of CleamUp
Week, toward which several agen
cies of the town are already work
ing. The propects are for a great
er interest than ever this year,
not only in the actual period of
Clean-Up Week, but in perma
nent continuing work that will
make the town more and move at
tractive.
Foremost in the activity are the
schools, which are organizing a
variety of contests. The Girl
Stouts and Boy Scouts are each
working on a window display, one
to be shown in the shop windows
t\tof Mountain Industries, the other
the windows of Blue Ridge
Weavers.
The Town administration is co
operating in every possible way,
and will remove all accumulated
trash, as it did last year. Con
tainers are to be placed about the
town and the public is urged to
help by having all trash collected
and ready for the Town trucks to
remove during Clean-Up Week.
The Garden Club is taking care
of all expenses, except that in
curred by the town in trash remov
al, and is soliciting contributions
for that purpose. Even the smal
lest contribution will help. All
sums of whatever size should be
sent to Mrs. Raymond P. Dodge,
the treasurer.—G. S.
Cooperative Order Os
Lespedeza Distributed
The County Committee for the
AAA has just finished distribut
ing a copperative order of lespede
za to farmers in order to assist
them in earning a greater part of
their soil building allowance. By
the assistance of the County Agent
they purchased 18,400 pounds of
certified Korean seed from B. B.
Miller, at Mt. Ulla, N. C. These
were excellent seed and up to the
usual high standard of seed coming
from this farm.
Seven demonstration pastures
are being put on in the county in
cooperation with the Plant Food
Institute, and other fertilizezr
agencies. Soil samples from these
plots have been taken and sent to
the college for testing for acidity.
Five of these demonstrations are
in cooperation with F. R. Farnham
and two are with T. L. Case.
RECREATIONAL MEETING
On Wednesday night February
28, the regular monthly recreat
ional meeting under Dr. W. P.
Jackson was held at Green Creek
Gymnasium. About 50 young peo
ple participated in the games and
folk dances with an equal number
of observers.
During the meeting the group
was shown a copy of the 1940 4-H
plan of work which carries a por
trait and is dedicated to Dr. Jack
son.
The meeting was one of the most
successful ever held in this county,
which shows that Dr. Jackson’s
influence is spreading and along
with it there is coming an even
greater appreciation of his work.
