Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., WEDNESDAY, MAR. 20,1940 Great Progress Made In Welfare Work The Polk County Council of Agencies met in Missildine Tuesday afternoon with Dr. C. Arthur Lincoln presiding. Rep resentatives were present from, the Helping Hand, the American Wo men’s Hospitals, the County De partment of Public Welfare, the County Department of Public Health, and the Red Cross. After reports from Mrs. David L. Edsall, secretary, and Miss Mae Irene Flentye, treasurer of the council, a report from the committee on financing the work of the Helping Hand .and the American Women’s Hospitals, Mrs. John Washburn, chairman, revealed that its recent letter campaign had brought good results but that more contributions were needed to reach the $1,500 necessary to support the work of these two indispensable organiza •tions. Rev. W. P. Jackson, chair tnan of the Recreation committee, reported excellent results in re creation work in the County and stated, that the group of young people from over the County would be in the gymnasium of the Tryon high school for instructional work tonight. Further plans for ad vancing the recreational instruc tion are under consideration. Miss Flentye stated that rock arid shell had been put on the driveway leading to the Katherine Beatson Health House; and the Council in structed the secretary to express its anpreciation to Road Commis sioner T. Mfx Watson and others instrumental in this work. Social Please Turn To Back Page 74 Advancements Are Made at Honor Court The Polk County Boy Scout Court of Honor held its monthly session Tuesday night at the Par ish House and 74 advancements were made in Scout work, 45 for the White boys and 29 for the Negro troop No. 2. Stout Executive R. Mi. Schiele and Mrs. Schiele, the secretary, assisted the Court consisting of chairman, Dr. C. Arthur Lincoln, Scoutmaster W. A. Schilletter, Coach Mr B. Caldwell, K. A. Bowen, J. M. Baker, C. H. Helms, Nelson Jackson, Jr., Major Bernard Sharp. After announcements advance ment of Stouts went forward as follows; Second class: Harrison Bridge man. Merit Badges: Animal Industrv, Tom Mfelton, Paul Butler, Dick Arthur. Phil Morris, Marion Ed wards. Athletics: Dick Arthur, Tom Melton, Jimmie Baker, Pickens Dur ham, Bobby Dick.
