Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1940 Struthers Burt to Speak Thursday At Lanier Club Struthers Burt, who will speak on Thursday at the regular month- V meeting of the Lanier club, is * 5n author and lecturer well-known m this country and abroad. Some of the most familiar titles of Mr. Burt’s books are Interpreter’s House. Delectable Mountain, Fes tival, the latter with its beautiful scenes laid on Lake Como. Powder River, the latest, comes from Mr. Burt’s experience with ranch life in Wyoming. He has made more than on.e stay in the island of Haiti and his talk here on Thurs day will be on the subject of “The Black Republic”. Those who have heard Mr. Burt’s delightful lectures have tried several times to get him to come to Tryon. Now that the opportunity is here, The Club wishes to share it with the whole community. All are welcome Thursday at 3:30. Fisher, 42 Warren Austin Fisher, of SWuda Route One, died Monday at mid night at St. Luke’s hospital after a week’s illness following an ap pendix operation. Mr. Fisher was employed by the State Highway Commission. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 at Friendship Baptist church, Salu da, with Rev. Malcolm Ross and Rev. N. B. Phillips officiating. His nephews will act as pallbearers. The deceased was a son of the late G. W. #nd Adeline Newman Fisher. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss S*ue She- Continued on Back Page.... That rough railroad crossing is terrible now, but they’ll soon have it fixed. It is right interesting to watch those people used to New York and other big cities moving their heads up and down the track, up and down the street, then in front of them and lastlv behind them and in the meantime feeling along with their feet to - keep from stumbling over a rail or rough ground. They don’t dare look down for fear something will hit them from one of six direc tions .... All friends of Mon treat will regret the loss of their big auditorium by fire on Monday morning .... Secretary Conrath of the Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce writes President Bowen of Tryon Chamber of Commerce for hotel rates for a lady visitor wishing to stop by Tryon on her way north. Said, “We enjoyed the Mayors’ Tour and are pleased that we may be able to have one of our visitors stop and spend a while in your city on the way north”. . . . Lois Avant at Bradenton, Fla., writes that the Avants heard Dr. Brittan Clark preach Easter Sun day at the First Presbyterian church there .... Where are we going to put all those cars.
