Announcement In making this my announce ment 'to be a candidate for the nomination to the House of Rep resentative from Polk County on the Republican ticket, I wish to present the following to the voters of the County irrespective of par ty ties, as being my platform: I will oppose any legislation that will interfere with the political autonomy of any County or poli tical sub-division of State. I favor the continuance of the Governors Hospitality Committee, and will work for an appropriation to continue the advertising cam paign in behalf of the state and its possiblities. I will favor any appropriation bill within reason that will assist the farmers of the State, with special reference to timber and soil conservation. I favor some kind of retirement fund or annuity fund for Public School Teachers, and adequate old age assistance for all old people. I will oppose any legislation that tfould tend to hamper the public service corporations, and will discourage any government interference with legitimate busi ness. I will oppose excessive tax ation of legitimate business, and will foster any movement to get new capital invested in the State. I oppose the present method of collecting the State retail sales tax, and will work for a bill to relieve our merchants of the duty of an unpaid tax collector. As to the absentee ballot, there have been too many promises about this already. I detest it, and will not solicit a single absentee ballot, believing that there are enough legitimate votes to elect me. I will work to put “teeth” in the bill which requires County Boards of Commissioners to make periodi cal reports in the press of the Countv of their actions. I will offer or support a resolution call ing upon the legislature to rise to its' constitutional duty of re districting the State that Western North Carolina may have its just representation in our legislative assemblies. The last four assemb lies have ighored their constitu tional duty in this matter. I fav or a State Department of Justice, patterned after the Federal De partment . The removal of the sheriffs office from the elective list. All criminal investigations to be conducted under the control of a central bureau. All civil papers to be served by duly elected con stables or bailiffs. In making this concession to centralization for the purpose of greater efficiency, I should at the sarnie time work for the return to the people of‘each community all of its civil prerog atives. Especially the election of its school boards and other officers of a particularly local character. In matters of local legislation I would be governed by advice from outstanding business farmers and workingmen regard-® less of party ties. In matters Statewide importance not covered by this declaration I would of course, be governed by my party caucus. I will defend this platform on any rostrum at any time that my political opponent may elect to name. George C. Dedmondt.
