Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., THURSDAY, APR. 18, 1940 The Horse and Hound Show For results of prize winners in v#r ±he 15th annual Horse and Hound ~%how we refer our readers to the Asheville and Char lotte newspapers which today are publishing pictures and four col umns of news about the event. The weather was perfect; the scenery was beautiful and the largest crowd in the history of the show covered Harmon Field. Thev were there from nearly every State in the Union. Hundreds of details were so smoothly handled that an outsider would never dream that volunteer h~lp from citizens and visitors were running the show. Year aft Q r vear the Riding & Hunt Club iron out wrinkles and make improve ments. For days and weeks ahead plans had been made by the officers of the show. Each committee knew its duty, and the operation of the show is a tribute to the spirit of I of all those having a yart in making the event such a big success. GARDEN PILGRIMAGE MONDAY AND TUESDAY The annual garden Pilgrimage bv the Garden Club Council of Srartanburg will be held on Mon dav and Tuesday, April 22-23. This year in addition to the well known gardens of Mrs. L. J. Blake, Mrs. A. M. Chreitzberg, Mrs. H. F. Chreitzberg, Mrs. Jesse Cleve land among others a number of new gardens will be open this year. The tour is to include 26 ' gardens and the most convenient routes will be clearly marked for the benefit of out-of-town guests. Lum Dimsdale, 85 Burned To Death No inquest is planned into the death early Wednesday morning of Lum Dimsdale, 85-year-old resident of the Cooper’s Gap section of Polk County. Mr. Dimsdale apparently lost his life when he reentered his burn ing dwelling after assisting his wife, who is blind, to safety. Neighbors, who were attracted to the scene by the blaze, found Mrs. Dimsdale alone in a near-by field, and found the charred re mains of her husband in the ashes of the burned building. Funeral arrangements had not been announced Wednesday night. Surviving are one sister, Miss Dora Dimsdale, of Rutherfordton, and one brother, J. P. Dimsdale, of Cooper’s Gap. State Candidates At Shows Wednesday Judge S'am Cathey of Asheville, candidate for Congress, and J. M. Broughton of Raleigh, candidate for Governor, were among the prominent visitors at the Horse and Hound Show on Wednesday at Harmon Field. Other officials here were T. Mlax Watson, State Highway Commissioner of Spin dale, Hugh E. Noell. Division Highway Engineer, E. L. Kemper, Assistant Division Engineer of Shelbv, John Poteat of Marion, District Engineer in charge of work here; Roy Fancis, Waynes ville, Assistant U. S. Solicitor, Edwin Gill, Raleigh, State Parole Commissioner and many County officials and candidates.
