Eat. 1-31-28 Stores to Close On Thursday Afternoons ■ Most of the stores and business houses in Tryon have agreed to close their doors every Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock during the months of June, July and August in order for the clerks and em ployees to enjoy a half holiday to gether with parties, games, fish ing, trips, etc. The promoters state that industrial employees, farmers and many others have Saturday afternoons off through out the year, and the Thursday afternoon closing will giive the storekeepers a break. Softball Wednesday The Tryon high school and the Adams-Millis teams will play > a game on Wednesday after ®>oon at 5 o’clock at Harmon Fie’d. Everybody invited. Two Fires Sunday The Tryon Volunteer Fire Dept, was called to two houses on Sun day afternoon. One was the J. Foster Searles house occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stearns where paper was burning in, a chimney; and the other was at Marvin Ed wards house where a defective oil stove caught on fire. The Germans are continuing their drive through Holland and Belgium. TRYON, N C., TUESDAY, MLAY 14, 1940 Curb reporter For many years C. W. Ballenger has been building up one of the biggest Hound Shows in the Country. John H. Allen of luka, Mississippi, who judged this year’s show writes to President Carter Brown: “You have a great show at Tryon. In fact it was the best class of hounds I have ever seen. There were several hounds there that could not place in Tryon that could win in most shows. I wish for the Tryon show that it con tinues to be one of the very best shows in America. And it will be as long as the high class gentle men that run it continue to do so.” . . . . Once a Tryonite, always a Tryonite, seems to be true. J. B. Vandiver of New York called at the Ballenger Co., the other day and said it was his first visit here since 1886, 54 years ago, when Ballenger & Smith were in busi ness where the Ballenger Co., is now. He plans to be here about a week more. . . . Our Chinese correspondent sends us a Rotary Club bulletin of the Tsingtao, China, Rotary Club which con tains an interesting account of Rotarian Eugene Turner’s talk on 100th anniversary of the use of adhesive postage stamps.
