Est. 1-31-28 Oven The Top! And still going strong! Polk County’s contribution to the War Jtelief Fund reached a total this of $762.66 with gifts com _Jfig in steadily. Os this amount sl6 came from the Tryon Country Day School and $8.66 from the Tryon Public School, making a total received to date for the Children’s Fund of $24.66. The hope of the Polk County Chapter is to send in SI,OOO and more. In fact we should double our quota. The campaign committee reports that many persons have not yet contributed. Every cent given to the War Relief Fund goes to suffering people in Europe. Noth ing is taken out by Mae local chap ter or by National Headquarters for the expenses of the campaign. The ten million dollar's asked of the entire country for War Relief is a minimum amount needed now. With 5,000,000 war refugees re ported in Belgium, besides the r>th~ Ofcr millions elsewhere, all that can given is necessary to lessen in -part the terrible deprivations and sufferings of these ravaged people. The following telegram from Norman H Davis, President of the National Red Cross was re ceived this morning by Dr. C. Ar thur Lincoln, Chairman of the Poll- County Chapter: “With several million men locke' 1 in mortal combat on French an-' Belgium soil, the relief ne°ds o" Beleium and French peopl" reaching staggering oropo~tions Already 5,000,000 pitiful refugees are clogging every road into cen tral France trying to escape bomb ing and strafing from airplanes. Continued on Back Pape TRYON. N C., WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 1940 Softball News Tryon’s softball league will open Thursday with a double-header. The first game will begin at 4 o’clock between Soumerco and the high school boys; the second game will begin at 6 o’clock between the Bushwhackers and Landrum.. Sev en teams will participate in the league, namely: Bushwhackers, Soumerco, High School, Adams- Milils , Landrum, Hornets and Kilowatts. Everyone is invited to enjoy these games at no expense. These teams will provide quite a lot of entertainment for the spectators. The managers of the team; have selected for umpires; D. S. Blois, Dick Taylor and R. E. Brantley. Every player as well as the spectators may be assured o- p fair and efficient umpiring by these men.
