A. Schilletter. Miss Kelly Honored Friends of Miss Martha Kellv, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Kelly, will be interested to learn that she s one of eight Univer sity of North Carolina co-eds at Chapel Hill, who have been nam ed for membership in Alpha Kap pa Gamma, highest honorary so ciety for women on the campus. Eligibility is based upon char acter, leadership and scholarship. Miss Kelly is a Senior at the University. Western Carolina Tribune. Mrs. B. King Couper, who spent the winter in Charleston, S. C., has returned to Tryon for the summer and will be at her Rock House Art Gallery. Mr. and Mrs. George Dewey Cooksev had as guests yesterday and today Miss Sara Darnell, Miss Doris Darnell, Miss Joyce Cook sey and Miss Evelyn McGraw, all of Spartanburg. They attended the graduation of George Cooksey. Jr., from Tryon high school and were among the out of town at the dance given by Mr. and Mrs. Cooksey on Friday evening: at the Tryon Country Club. Mrs. E. H. Kaminer of Aiken S. C., is the weekend guest of Miss Molly Bernard. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ward and daughter, Miss Alene Ward, will leave on Sunday for Atlanta to at tend the graduation of Bill Ward, from the Georgiy School of Tech nology. Nelson Jackson, Jr., has return ed from a business trip in New York. URGES PREPAREDNESS Major Bernard Sharp delivered an interesting address at the Try on Rotary Club on Friday at 1 p. m., at Sunnydale. He discussed the present European Situation and showed the need for America to be fully prepared with an ade quate army, navy and air corp for any eventuality. He illustra ed his talk with maps showing the closeness of South America to Europe and the possible footholds aggressor nations could get in the western hemisphere. Major W. A. Schilletter had charge of the program. President E. Perry Manville announced that the Rotary Club had already started its col lection of tinfoil to be sold for charity. Owen’s Pharmacy and Sunnydale are already receiving the wrappers from chewing gum and cigarette packages. COLORED SCHOOL CLOSING The closing season was attended with its usual interest and success. Although the class was small, there was evidence of accomplish ments. The Rev. Farley Fisher of Rutherfordton, delivered the annual sermon and last night Prof. B. J. Lee, principal of Pittsboro high school made the commence ment address. His subject was: “Some Facts on the business of Life”. Each was a master in h's field. With befitting remarks, L. R.
