Food for War Sufferers
The following clipping from the
editorial page of Saturday’s Chris
tian Science Monitor, an interna
tional newspaper, printed in Bos
ton, will be of interest to readers
of the Bulletin:
“To The Christian Science Moni
tor:
“As America wakes up, we find
there are so many ways in which
most of us can help not only our
selves to defend ourselves and
our ideals, but there are many,
many ways we can help our
brothers overseas who are bearing
the brunt of the present attack
upon human liberties and rights.
May I tell the Monitor readers of
one way that is being worked out
in a very wide awake, progressive
little town near here—Tryon,
North Carolina?
“In Tryon there is a regular
town meeting, after the pattern
cf the New England town meet
ings, where anybody can say what
he thinks, and where local prob
lems can be worked out in uni
son. At a recent town meeting
the people of Tryon decided to es
tablish ‘war acres’, as an effectual
help towards meeting the food
shortage which may last a long
time after the fighting is over.
Everyone who has room for a
garden—large or small—is setting
a plot, anywhere from a few
yards to a few acres, on which to
raise food for war sufferers. There
will also boa community cannery,
operated by volunteers, where
quantities of food can be preserved
in shape for shipning anywhere.
