The paving of the new stretch obs highway between the railroad crossing in Tryon and the Sbuth Carolina state line began on Mon day and about the length of a city block was completed the first day. There is only approximately a mile of the road but it will eliminate a rough section in one of the finest roads in the country. The highway is always busy but during the weekends when people are traveling to the mountains and to the seas there- is -almost a con tinuous stream of cars loaded with vacationists. The highway de nartments of the Carolinas have been doing great work these past few years. The good roads they have been building will give some service to all the people for man ,T years to come. The entrance to Tryon proper will always have ex- danger hazzard until the Oak dHall bank is cut away to allow view of the railroad trains. RELIGIOUS MEETINGS Rev. Gurley Davis and Rev. C., THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1940 DONATES MONEY TO WORTHY CAUSES It is said one should not hide his light under a bushel but noth ing was said about getting under the bushel and sticking the light out to be seen. So that’s what a good Yankee friend is doing for the people of this section. He likes us and wants to have a part in our activities, but living away from here he can’t take a personal part. However, from time to time he sends some money to help along the various projects such as the Christmas cheer fund, hospital, etc. This week he sent SSO to C. J. Lynch to be used for some worthy cause. That was a problem, for it is hard to dispose of SSO in a way that will do the most good without feeling that one would like to give something to some other worthy cause. After consulting several friends Mj\ Lynch decided to use the money to get a wheel chair for the use of invalids in this section. The Tryon Kiwanis Club already has three wheel chairs for this purpose donated by Mrs. John Brittan Clark, Miss Patricia Pensinger and the Lightner family, but they are not enough to supply the demand and they are being loaned to people who cannot afford to buy a chair. That is another problem for the committee in de ciding who is able to buy one. There should be enough chairs on hand so that anyone temporarily crippled could get one for a week or or longer. Now that a new chair i s to be secured those desiring to use it should put in their application at once to Mr. Lynch so that they mav be taken care of as soon as a chair is available.
