Vining, Editor Vol. 13. Est. 1-31-28 Softball News Soumerco will play the Land rum Browns today at Landrum and the Landrum team will play \ Tryon High School at Harmon Field. On Wednesday the Bushwhack ers will play the Browns at Har mon Field. On Thursday there will be a double-header at Harmon Field. First game at 5 o’clock between Soumerco and Kilowatts and the second between High School and Landrum. On Friday Landrum will play Bushwhackers at Landrum and Tfyon High school will play the Browns at Harmon Field. CURB REPORTER The British have surrendered Somaliland in Africa to the Ital ians. This territory joins Ethio pia. The British claim they have been doing much damage to Ger man air bases . . . Canada and U. S. working out details of joint defense program . . . . U. S. Coast Guard boats are evacuating flocd refugees in North Carolina in the Roanoke valley .... Tryon is getting to be a city. The Curb Reporter actually took a ride on an elevator in Tryon. C., TUESDAY, AUG. 20, 1939 Federation Picnic Oil Saturday August 24 Asheville, Aug. 19.—Postponed from Wednesday, August 14th, on account of heavy rains and flooded highways, the annual district pic nic of the Farmers Federation will be held at the Swannanoa test farm, on Saturday, August 24th. The day’s program will be es sentially the same as originally planned with Dr. D. W. Daniel, Clemson College humorist, as the principal speaker. Dr. Daniel will speak at 11 o’clock in the morning in the test farm assembly hall. W. Kerr Stott, state commissioner of agriculture, also is expected to at tend the picnic and address the gathering. James G. K. McClure, federation president, will preside and will be assisted in conducting the numerous entertainment events and contests by Max Roberts educational director for the farm cooperative. Major contest of the day will be a singing convention in the af ternoon to determine the champion ship choir and quartet of Western North Carolina. Twelve choirs and 12 quartets, winners in county contests previously held, are expect ed to compete. Prizes of $lO and $5 are offered for the first and second ranking choirs, and $5 and $3 for the first and second.rank ing quartets. Prizes will also be awarded the best specialty performers, the largest family present, the oldest and youngest married couples, the baldest head, the longest beard and the largest truck-load of persons attending.
