Est. 1-31-28 DEFEND AMERICA! Mrs. Houstin Shockey addressed Friday afternoon an informal £%eeting of twenty-five persons at ifczflie home of Mrs. E. Milton Dex ter on the work of “The Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies” of which William Allen White is national chairman. The gathering voted unanimously to form a local organization to “give all moral and material aid which may legally be given to maintain England as our first line of de fense.” It was voted to call a pub lic meeting at an early date of all interested persons in Polk County. A nominating committee was elected to call such a meeting and to present to it the names of persons suitable for offices and committees. Mrs. Houstin Shockey was chosen temporary secretary, and Dr. C. Arthur Lincoln, Mrs. Harmon Vanderhoef, Jr., and Mrs. George Holmes were made the nom inating committee. Program At W. N. C.
