Wor- Continued On Back Page TRYON, N C., SATURDAY, OCT, 12, 1940 Organize to Defend America A mass meeting which filled the Parish House Friday night voted enthusiastically to organize a Polk County Chapter of the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies. The following officers and committee chairmen were elected: W. E. Kilpin, chairman; Mrs. Houstin Shockey, secretary; Dud ley C. Smith, treasurer; Mrs. Harman Vanderhoef, chairman publicity committee; Miss Kath erine Hamilton, chairman mem bership committee. Franklin P. Shockey of Chicago spoke on the subject, “If Hitler Wins.” Dr. C. Arthur Lincoln presided. Mrs. George H. Holmes, for a committee, put in nomination the names of the above officers and committee members. It was suggested that every person send at once to his con gressmen the following message, or one similar, by letter, telegram, or postcard: “As a citizen, I earnestly urge you to give all pos sible aid in assuring immediate dispatch, to Britain, of twenty five Flying Fortresses, twenty tor pedo boats, and as many combat and pursuit planes as possible.” Names of senators from each stat'' and of the representative from each congressional district can be secured from Mrs. Houstin Shockey, secetary of the committee. Sinclair Service Station Under New Management The Sinclair Service Station which has been c’osed for several weeks has reopened and is now under the management of Claude Lawter of Chimney Rock.
