Est. 1-31-28 Polk County Quota Os Drafted Men Is 59 Chairman Julian B. Hester of ■ Jpk Polk County Draft Board has "Reived a letter from Governor Clyde R. Hoey, stating that the quota for Polk County in the selective draft is 59. Credit has already been given for those in the service, but does not include Franklin Little who was accept ed last week. This will leave the quota at 58. About 16 men have volunteered, the latest being Rob ert Homer Slone, whose order num ber is 397. The first 25 order numbers were published last Sat urday. Below is published an ad ditional list. Between now and June 30th, 58 men will be selected for the draft service. If the first 58 are eligible no more will be called, but if exceptions are made more men will be called until the required quota is filled. Following is a continuation from Saturday’s list. Jackson, listed a s a native of Polk County, N. C. He has joined the electrical en gineering staff of the company at Charlotte. The Duke Magazine founded by the late John Paul Lucas is now edited by John Paul Luca's, Jr., who came from an English professorship at Clemson college to take over part of his father’s work. Before being pro fessor at Clemson he was instruc tor of phychology at N. C. State and prior to that was Master of English at the Asheville School for Boys. All three places give him common ties with Tryon, not to mention the Duke Power Co., and his beloved father who had made many friends in this section by his sincere interest in the prog ress and welfare of the section as a whole. Shakespeare would have said, ‘ His life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world ‘This was a man’!” . . . . Tom Costa and Dr.B. B.
