Gosnell First From Polk Under The Draft Volunteer Call Tryon Daily Bulletin. J)ear Mr. Vining: P Cole L. Gosnell, who holds order number 1170 with our local draft headquarters, was the first white man to volunteer for immediate induction before this Board. The local Board classified him in Class 1-A. Dr. Palmer has examined Mr. Gosnell and advises that he has passed his examinaion. He will report for duty December 10, 1940, at Fort Bragg, N. C., for final examination. Mr. Gosnell has formerly been in the Army Air Corps from 1936 to 1938 and holds an honorable discharge. War Relief The gala dinner at the Auberge last evening was a great success, the guests numbering sixty-seven. Mrs. W. Sassoon was the winner of the evening coat donated by a friend. The workrooms will be close 4 on Thursday, November 21, and Thursday, November 28. Mrs. Helen Harwood has taken charge of the knitting section and will be at the workrooms every Mondav, Wednesday and Friday from ten o’clock until twelye o’clock, to give instructions in knitting. Wool may be obtained and knitted articles returned to the workrooms at any time. TRYON, N C., WED. NOVEMBER 20, 1940 Child Dies In Fire At Landrum, Tuesday A nine-year-old boy was burned to death and seven other members of his family were burned badly enough to require hospital treat ment about 9 o’clock last night. The flames left their three-room farmhouse near the Joseph Walker school, four miles east of Land rum, in a smouldering mass of ruins. The fatally-burned child was Marion Abernathy, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Abernathy, who live on the Campobello-New Pros pect highway near the Joseph Walker school. The child’s parents and six brothers were brought to the Gen eral hospital here, where at least one of them was believed in a “dying” condition early this morn ing. The injured: Marion Abernathy, 45; his wife, Mrs. Mollie Roddy Abernathy, 49; five sons, Oscar Abernathy, 25; Robert Abernathy, 21; Jessie Abernathy, 13; Roy Abernathy, 11; and Baylis Aber nathy, 4. All of the injured suffered burns of varying degrees—Jessie the most serious. In addition, Robert suffered a badly-lacerated arm from broken window glass. Three members of the- family escaped serious injury in the fire which leveled their frame dwelling home and which investigating offi cers reoorted apparently was started by an exolosion of gasoline or kerosene in the kitchen of the house.
