HERE FROM CHINA
R. J. “Jack” Metcalf, U. S.
Marines, has arrived from Ports
mouth Navy Yard for a 15 days’
visit with his parents. Mr. and
. ,J£rs. G- E. Metcalf. Jack has been
Shanghai, China, for the past
TiJour years and has many interest
w ing accounts of the Shino-Japanese
war. He thinks the Chinese will
finally win because there are too
many of them. As soon as they
get some modern fighting equip
ment they’ll drive the Japs out
of China. He brought home some
interesting pictures of the results
of several battles. One of the pic

TRYON, N C., MONDAY, DEC. 9, 1940
CONCERT AT LANIER
LIBRARY
We often hear it said, regret
fully, that Tryon is a little too
far from the Asheville and Spar
tanburg musical advantages. Wed
nesday evening the tables are to
be turned, and the neighboring
towns are desirous of coming to
us for a musical treat.
Mr. Mark Wollner, violinist,
with Miss Mary Brooks as ac
companist, are giving a program
that will have a wide appeal. All
sorts of music lovers may count
on an evening of real enjoyment.
The recent improvements at the
Library have given it an atmos
phere that is suited to a gala eve
ning, and such it promises to be
—a real “opening night” for the
season’s Christmas festivities.
GUNS, PISTOLS WANTED
Capt. Rufus Zogbauni has been
appointed to receive old guns, pis
tols, helmets and ammuntion for
the defense of the British homes
in case of invasion. The National
Committee in New York reports
that already it has received 1,131
guns, 914 revolvers, 514 binocu
lars, 136,881 rounds of ammuni
tion. Anyone having such instru
ments to aid the British in the
defense of their homes may leave
them in Tryon at the British War
Relief office upstairs over Buch
anan’s 5&10c store.
