Est. 1-31-28 THE GARDEN CLUB The Tryon Garden club met at the home of Mlrs. Samuel A. Woody on Wednesday with Mrs. Woody and Mrs. W. E. Kilpin as w After the regular business meet ing Mrs. John Washburn remarked on the Tryon Garden Club’s in terest in Polk County and intro duced Miss M. L. Garrison, who spoke of the many phases of her work with the women and young people of the County and of their accomplishments. Miss Garrison presented MTs. Quincy Powell, of the home dem onstration club of Sunshine, who spoke of her gardening and showed some artictic arrangements of her own grown vegetables. Miss Tes sie Forest was also introduced and she exhibited some lovely weav ings made by herself of her own vegetable dyed wools. Miss Forest is a member of Warrior Mountain home demonstration club. This program proved highly entertain ••**kig and very informative. After "pie meeting tea was served by the ' hostesses. —Tryon Garden Club. Baseball Meeting Tonight In order to make plans for an early start next spring all per sons interested in having a base ball team for Tryon are asked to meet on Thursday night at 7:30 at the Tryon school gymnasium. Miss Ina T. Tyler, superinten dent of public welfare for Polk County, will be the guest speaker at the Tryon Rotary club on Fri day at 1 p. m., at Sunnydale. The program will be in charge of J. T. Arledge. THURSDAY, DEC. 12, 1940 TRYON, N C., Big Scout Meeting Held at Shelby Shelby, Dec. 10th—The Execu tive Board of the Piedmont Coun cil of the Boy Scouts of America held the biggest meeting in its 'history of the past 17 years, in attendance of men from the coun ties of Alexander, Burke, Cald well, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, McDowell, Polk and Rutherford. Reports were re ceived on an organization and ex tension program which is believed by the officials of the Council to be the most comprehensive program of its kind attempted by the organ ization in an effort to serve an in creasing number of boys. The pro gram includes a boy-fact survey which was recently made in the eleven counties of the Council with the help and cooperation of the schools of the area. The informa tion gained through the survey reveals that thousands of boys are desirous of being Cubs and Scouts. From the informaton obtained in tfye survey, the various County and Community districts of the Council will launch an intensive campaign to enlist the churches and other institutions to sponsor needed Cub Packs and Scout Troops. In addition, every Troop and Pack has been asked to en roll up to its maximum strength. Reports were received from the Commissioner Service showing that the Troop and Pack Inven tory and Roll Call of the 159 Troops and 10 Cub Packs has been almost completed and that the va rious units in the Council are training for emergency service Please Turn To Back Page
