Often committees have to do all the work and then do the begging. As this project is one of good will, coming from the hearts of all those partici pating, it would encourage those willing workers who seem to find time to do things for us, if we sent our donations, instead of waiting to be solicited . . . Thanks to the Town of Tryon Grady Ave., pedestrians have a foot bridge across the stream near Andrews Stable. It is a big help to a lot of people .... Misses Minerva and Eva Avant report good health and spring weather at Winter Park, Fla. . . . J. Vernon Hall, Jr., for merly of Tryon, now of Daytona Beach, Fla., will leave next month for the Joe Stripp school of base ball at uriando, Fla., where Don Padgett, of Forest City, St. Louis Cardinals, and a friend of Chief Kiser, a member of the facul ty. So is Joe Medwick, Joe Tink er, Van Mungo and others. Vern on is now 6 ft. 2 and weighs 190 lbs. H,e hopes to b e a first base man .... Jennings Ford is also at Daytona Beach. . . . The Christ- Continued on Back Page MONDAY, DEC. 16, 1940 TRYON, N C., ESCAPED PRISONER CAUGHT IN TRYON One of four prisoners who es caped from the Polk County jail in Columbus several weeks ago, was captured early Sunday morn ing on Trade street in Tryon, The prisoner, booked as Bill Scruggs, who faces a charge of breaking and entering, was found by deputies in a car which had been stopped in a search for an alleged whiskey - carrier, Sheriff Hines reported. Scruggs, the second of the es caped captured, was returned to the county jail at Columbus. INFANT DIES William Clyde,, four-day-old son of' M!r. and Mrs. Clyde Pate of Green Creek community, died Sun day night at the home. Funeral services are to be held this after noon at Hickory Grove Baptist church. Interment in the church cemetery.
