Est. 1-31-28 TRYON, N C., TUESDAY, DEC. 31, 1940 Camp Operations In One Area Put on 24-Hour Basis Construction operations in at least one area of the army’s new Kpartanbrug infantry replacement Rrenter are scheduled to go on a full 24-hour basis today, following war department authorization of floodlights for one entire regimen tal area, it was learned yesterday from Major Neil R. McKay, con structing quartermaster for the project. Major McKay said application had been made for lights in all areas of the cantonment, and that when additional authorizations are received it will be possible to Bm p'oy several thousand additional workmen and thus bring the total employment at the camp to near 10,000. All night work thus far at the rroject has been on a limited basis he pointed out. Yesterday, as workmen went About their tasks under clear skies Ifor the first time in nearly a week, construction operations were launched™ the warehouse area of the camp. The laundry plant, which is located in the warehouse area, will be laid out today and construction will begin immediately, it was said. Other buildings in the area will rnclude a number of large ware houses, a cold storage plant, bak ery and other structures. Scheduled for early completion, Major McKay said, is the 50-mile network of roads and streets which will link various areas of— —Please Turn To Back Page North Carolina To Get $3,310,673.00 For Roads Washington, Dec. 30. —The sum of $3,310,673 will be available in Federal funds to be spent on the roads of North Carolina in 1941- 42 it was announced today by the Federal Works agency. This must be matched by state funds. Os the total, the regular Federal aid al lotment is $2,378,838, with $416,- 297 to be spent on secondary or feeder roads and $515,538 for elim ination of grade crossings. In making the apportionment,. Mi*. Carmody directed attention to the provision of the act that “the commissioner of public roads may give priority of approval to and expedite the construction of projects that are recommended ny the appropriate Federal Defense Agency as important to the na tional defense.” All states are being urged to use Federal-aid funds to the full extent possible for roads giving access to the numerous new and expanded army and navy bases, camps and training areas and to plants of defense industries, Mr. Carmody said, adding that such work is of an immediate and ur gent nature.
