Est. 1-31-28 CURB REPORTER The Polk County Draft Board has been notified that Polk Coun ty will be called on to furnish one Negro soldier for Ft. Bragg on January 30th. There are 366 in the call from the whole state. Chairman Julian Hester says a list of white soldiers drafted will be given out in a few days from the volunteer list .... Vance Connor of Connor’s Creek lost his house by fire on Monday night according to reports tjming to Tryon Tuesday .... Tryon is now just six hours from New York by airplane schedule accord ing to E. Perry Manville’s ad in today’s Bulletin. The airplane Jives Greenville, S. C. at 4:35 m. and reaches New York at 9:45, just 5 hours and 10 minutes later. According to the way young people attend dances, a fellow could leave Tryon in the after noon, attend a dance in New York that night and be back in Tryon next morning for a full day’s work. What would our covered wagon ancestors say! .... Old English type is very pretty but very hard for advertising pur poses. C., WEDNESDAY, JAN. 8, 1941 Baptist Missionary Society Met Tuesday Afternoon The Missionary Society of the Firgt Baptist church held its first meeting of the year on Tuesday afternoon at the home of Misses Ruth and Daisy McFee. After the devotional which was led by the program chairman, Mrs. R. H. Brady, Rev. B. G. Henry address ed the group on “Loyalty to Our Church During 1941.” During the business session the officers for the New Year took charge. They are as follows: President, Mrs. B. G. Henry; fiirst vice-president, Mrs. T. J. Kennedy; second vice-president, Mrs. J. T. Arledge; secretary, Mrs. R. H. Brady; treasurer, Miss Ruth McFee. Business for the New Year was discussed. The hostesses served tea and andwiches during the social hour. Several visitors were pres ent. Scout Founder Passes The Chief Scout of the World, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scout move ment, is dead, according to radio reports this morning from South Africa where the beloved Scodter died at age of 83. He established the first Boy S'cout camp in the English chan nel in 1907, and in 1908 wrote “Scouting for Boys”. The idea of Scouting was so popular that the movement spread rapidly all over the world. Former Ambassador Bullitt urges America to declare war on Germany and Italy.
