Garrett, of the State De partment of Conservation, Ral eigh, was the guest speaker at the Tryon Kiwanis club on Tues day at 1 p. m., at Hotel Tryon. Program was in charge of P. L. Barnette. Mr. Garrett told of the urgent need to control soil erosion, by planting forests, les pedeza and other soil saving crops. He said we need to plant ten times the amount of lespedeza we are now growing, and that we should learn how to use it economically. Loss of soil by erosion is associat ed with human suffering, pover ty, crime and disease. We must save our soil in order to grow crops that will produce an income to feed and clothe our people. He said 30 large reservoir lakes had been rendered useless by being filled with silt washed from the farm lands. Family Album will have its dress rehearsal this af ternoon at the Parish House. Owing to illness, Mrs. Harkness Smith will be unable to direct the stage setting and that job has been taken over by Mrs. Ralph Erskine and Mrs. Carroll Rogers. The sale of tickets indicates a widespread interest in the life and times of the Victorian era and it goes without saying that Friday’s production will have the unquali fied success it deserves.
