Tryon Garden Club to Be
On Radio Program, May sth
Announcement was made at the
regular meeting of the Tryon
Garden Club Wednesday afternoon
that the Club had been invited
to participate in the series of
programs which will be broadcast
during the next month over stat on
WWNC, Asheville, and suitable
features of the local club’s work
are now being prepared for broad
casting Wednesday aft ernoon,
March 5, from 3 to 3:15 o’clock.
The Garden Club meeting was
held at the home of Mrs. Dudley
C. Smith, with Mrs. Smith and
Mrs. Walter C. Hill as co-hos
tesses.
Several interesting and impor
tant reports were heard. Miss
Katharine Hamilton, reporting
from the Conservation Committee
in the absence of Mrs. C. C. Cur
tis, the chairman, stated that
progress was being made in the
movement to restrict the removal
of laurel roots from National
Forest areas, now being taken out
in considerable quantities for the
tobacco pipe industry.
Miss Susan Harper, who has
charge of conservation work in
the public schools, reported in de
tail on the progress of her work
with pupils and teachers in the
Tryon schools. Miss Harper sug
gested that the garden club
should donate to the Tryon public
school library a copy of “Wild
Flowers” by Homer D. House, and
the purchase and donation of this
book was at once made possible
by contributions from various
members.
Mrs. John Preston, chairman
for the Flower Show, reported
on plans for the spring show,
