C., THURSDAY, FEB. 27, 1941 DAY OF COMPASSION Under the leadership of the Council of Bishops, American Methodism has undertaken to raise $1,000,000 for extraordinary in an extraordinary time. ‘ ‘There has been a growing demand that the greatest of all Protes tant churches do something un usual in response to the unpre cedented tragedy of the world. Persons everywhere instinctively felt that the Methodist church could not continue to operate its ordinary routine in such a time as this. March 2nd, 1i941, has been designated as the Day of Com passion. To join with all the Mlethodist churches, the Methodist church of Tryon will take a sac rificial offering for the. following: 1: Overseas relief; 2: Help for our British people and churches; 3: For religious work in or near army camps of the United States. It is desired not only the Metho- but anyone interested in this J(Ood Samaritan cause to remit their offering to Thomas H. Greene, Tryon. —schreyer. ELLIS AT ROTARY The Rev. R. A. Ellis, pastor of the First Baptist church of Land rum, who recently returned from Louisville, Ky., will be the guest speaker at the Tryon Rotary Club on Friday at 1 p. m., at Sunnydale Log Cabin. The program will be in charge of Dr. Fred Owen. Airplane crashed near Atlanta early this morning; four killed including Eddie Rickenbacber, and seven injured, according to radio reports. No details as to cause. Plans Are In Making For Clean-Up Week —April 7-12 Clean-up Week is again coming around tp Tryon, and this year it is to be from April 7 to 12. Already the municipal authori ties, civic organizations and the public schools of Tryon have sig nified their interest in Clean-up Week to Mrs. Raymond Dodge, chairman of the Civic Commit tee of Tryon Garden Club, who is directing Clean-up Week ac tivities. Official action in support of the week is expected soon from the municipality and the fullest co operation by all interests in the town is anticipated. The schools are working out their program, which as hereto fore will comprise various pro jects and competitions looking to a brighter and a cleaner village. GS GIRL SCOUTS Preparing for the Court of Awards which is to be held within three weeks, the Scouts are com pleting their final requirements for the various ranks and merit badges. The formal opening on Wednes day afternoon at 3:30 o’clock was led by Cynthia Brand and the singing was led by Patricia Gray. In the business part of the meeting the Girl Scouts’ cabin that the girls hope to receive was discussed. They have always want ed one and they hope their wish comes true.
