Est. 1-31-28 Bacon Announces For Mayor’s Office Town Commissioner F. P. Bacon has announced his candidacy for by filing his name with the Town Manager C. H. Helms, according to the official records at the Town Hall. Senator Bacon has served as mayor twice and as town commissioner numerous times. With the announcement of Mayor Missildine for re-election, this makes two candidates for the office of Mayor. Andrews, White Announce For Town Commissioner R. Ben White and R. 0. An drews, two members of the pres ent board of Town Commission ers have announced in today’s Bulletin that they will offer for re-election. As F. P. Bacon, the [third Town Commissioner has an nounced for the office of Mayor there will be room for another Commissioner candidate without opposition until more than three offer for the three available places. Square Dance Tonight The Tryon Volunteer Firemen’s Square Dance for the benefit of British Fire Fighters, will be held tonight at the Tryon school gym nasium. The public is invited to attend. All proceeds go toward the relief of British fire fighters, says Chief J. S. Arledge of the Tryon Fire Department. $1.50 Year in the Carolinas TRYON, N. C., WEDNESDAY, APR. 9, 1941 Pupils Get Prizes Today In Clean-Up Week Contests At a gathering of pupils and Garden Club visitors held today at noon in the auditorium of the Tryon high school, prizes were awarded to winners in the various contests arranged in the schools in connection with Clean-Up Week, which is now in progress. Mrs. Harkness Smith, president of the Garden Club, awarded the prizes as follows: Primary grades, folders: First, Vance McCown, Vernon Foster and Kenneth Durham, teacher, Miss Johnson; second, Clarence Kuykendall, Junior Smith and Doris Owens, teacher, Mrs. Wat son ; also awarded second prizes, Ann Wallace, John Felts and Pauline Blackwell, teacher, Miss Daniels; third, Billy Rhodes, Jean Arledge and Billy Fisher, teach er, Mrs. McGeachy; also awarded third prizes, Van Green, Ruby Pittman and Shirley Ann Speigle, teacher, Mrs. Caldwell. High school, essays: First, Evelyn Taylor-Tanner; second, Evelyn McClure; third, Evelyn Cromer; posters, first Jane Meri wether; second, Jean Brantley; third, Evelyn Cromer. The results of contests in the colored school will be announced Thursday. Greeks Fight Back While the Greeks are actually fighting the Italians and the Ger mans a movie entitled “The Greeks Fight Back” is being shown tonight and Thursday at Tryon Theatre.
