Spartanburg has a new mayor,
Jennings L. Thompson, who de
feated Mayor T. W. Woodworth.
Maury Pearson, the singer who
has appeared in Trycn a number
of times was elected councilman.
In Rutherfordton, M. Georgion,
former Polk County citizen and
former manager of the Coxe Green
River plantation, lost cut in his
race for mayor. The winner was
B. B. Waldrop. Mr. Georgion is
a native of France and spent
much of his life in the banking
business in Turkey before coming
to America.
In Monday’s Bulletin it was
reported that there was no oppo
sition in the Saluda mayor's race,
but at last minute Herbert Pace
changed his candidacy from coun
cilman to maycr and the voters
will choose between Roy T. Bais
den and Mr. Pace.
In Tryon many lovers of civic
beauty are interested in candi
dates who will have a street clean
er pick up trash on the sidewalks
and streets of the residential sec
tions and who will put in needed
trash recepticles for those
thoughtful citizens who don’t want
to throw paper on the streets and
yet don’t want to carry the stuff
around in their pockets until they
find a convenient place. Tryon is
one of the best towns in the
country and one of the best gov
erned and operated, but there is
room for a little improvement to
make it still better; in the matter
of cleaner streets, according to a
reporter of the Bulletin. He says
just plain civic pride, and love for
a town should prompt a policeman,
city worker, or ordinary citizen
to pick up a stray piece of paper,
cigarette wrapper, candy wrapper
and the hundreds of unsightly
things seen on Tryon’s beautiful
streets. But they have to have a
container nearby.
