Looking Westward For the
Light
Miany of us listened on Sun
day afternoon to the deeply mov
ing address of Prime Minister
Churchill, which seemed to ring
as never before with a faith and
resolution that are super human.
In closing he made an appeal to
America, using a quotation from
a poem written many years ago
by an English poet, Arthur Hugh
Clough. Perhaps the whole pcem
would be of interest:
“Say not the struggle naught
availeth,
The labor and the wounds are
vain;
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been, things
remain.
If hopes were dupes fears may
be liars;
It may be in yon smoke concealed
Your comrades chase e’en now the
fliers,”
And, but for you, possess the field.
For while the tired waves, vainly
(breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain.
Far back, through creeks and
inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.
And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in
the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how
slowly;
But westward, look, the land is
bright!”
In its application to the mo
ment and to America as Britain’s
hope this needs no comment, but
it does need and deserve several
thoughtful readings.—ET. G. C.
