Est. 1-31-28 Entertain Basketball Teams Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jackson, Jr., entertained the Try on high school basketball teams on Mon ay evening with a banquet at home. Miniature basket and back boards made the place cards and each member of the varsity was presented a small geld basketball with enameled blue “T” and “1941 Champions” engraved o n it. The Tryon team members enjoying the event were Harold Taylor, Seth Vining, Jr., Jimmy Jackson, Frank McFar land, Marion Gren, Edward Beat son, Jack Melton, Burrell Byers, Jimmy Baker, Julius Earl Brock. Other guests included Coach M. B. Caldwell, A. M. Chisolm, Har old Culler and Dutton Beatson. The Tryon team won the Polk County Championship for 1940-41 for the first time in many years, and reached the semi-finals in the Blue Ridge Conference tourna -• ment. Tournament Wednesday The final mixed foursome golf tournament and tea of the present series will be held on Wednesday afternoon at the Tryon Country Club. Mrs. Jefferson Coe will be chairman of the hostess committee for the tea. The Club greens and new rock walls are very inviting now, says Pro Larry Brooks, who is eager to end the series with a bang. The Town of Tryon is holding a municipal election today. The / results will be in Wednesday morning’s Asheville Citizen and in the Tryon Daily Bulletin. TRYON, N. C., TUESDAY, MAY/ 7 j 1941 Sale of Johnson Place Is Finally Closed . The final papers on the sale of the Tom Johnson place in Co lumbus township were closed this week, C. J. Lynch, local realtor announced today. The new owners are Mr. and Mrs. William C. Free man of Chicago. The transaction has been underway for several weeks. The Johnson farm is one of the best in the county and con sists as some 600 acres. Mr. Free man, who is vice-president of the Midwest Utilities Co., is making extensive improvements on the property and will change its pro duction from cotton, corn, etc., to hay and pasture crops for the purpose of raising beef cattle. Homer Durham is in charge of the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will buy elsewhere in the county and continue to make their home in this section. A. C. CARPENTER A. C. Carpenter, 61, of Land rum, died at the hospital this morning. He had been in declining health for some time. Funeral services will be held on Wednes day afternoon at the Landrum Methodist church of which he was a member of the beard of stew ards. The Rev. J. G. Stroud of the Methodist church and the Rev. R. A. Ellis of the Baptist church will officiate. The deceased is sur vived by two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Belwood of Greenville, S. C.. and Miss Dorothv Carpen ter of Atlantic City, N. J. Mr. Carpenter was a native of Lin coln County, N. C., son of Pink and Mattie Huss Carpenter.
