Est. 1-31-28 Former Governor Hoey Delivers Commencement Address Here k The closing exercises of the high school were held Fri day evening at 8 o’clock at the school auditorium. The com mencement address was delivered by the Hon. Clyde R. Hoey of Shelby, former governor of North Carolina. The speaker was in troduced by the chairman of the Tryon School Board, Nelson Jack son, Jr. Diplomas were presented by the superintendent Major W. A. Schilletter. Others on the stage were the principal and ac ting superintendent M. B. Cald well, D. 9. Blois and James Lankford of the School Board and the Rev. George M. Schreyer who gave the invocation. The valedictory address by Miss Hope Schilletter and the saluta tory by John Ralph Moore were of the high training and jr/ocd spirit existing in the school. Governor Hoey said that only about one-fourth of the high school graduates enter college but that whether they go to college or not there is opportunity for everyone to be what he wants to be. There is a great need to know things in order to accept the chal lenges cf today. The fundamentals of human character have not changed. The same virtues of honesty, courage, etc., are needed today. Education should teach one how to live and how to make a living. One should learn to do things with his hands as well as fill his head with knowledge.
