Est. 1-31-28 Polk Students Are m Graduated Monday '(P/lreensboro, June I.—Miss Eliza beth Virginia Egerton, daughter of W. G. Egerton of Mill Spring, will be graduated from the Wo man’s College of the University of North Carolina on June 2, with an A. B. in primary education. Miss Egerton, a member of the Adelphian society, was a member of the Y. W. C. A. her freshman year. She was a member of the Collegiate 4-H Club her freshman, sophomore, and junior years and was president in her sophomore year. Miss Egerton was on the honor roll and was a member of the Square Dance club her junior year. She was a hall proctor and a member of the Education club her junior year. She now holds a teachers certificate qualifying Wher to teach in the primary grades ®|)f North Carolina. Miss Egerton will be remembered in Tryon most for her splendid talk at the Ki wanis and Rotary clubs when she gave a report on her visit to Washington at the National 4-H club convention which she attend ed as a delegate from this district. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Egerton and Miss Mollie Egerton drove to Greensboro on Sunday for the commencement exercises. C., MONDAY, JUNE 2, 1941 Defense Savings Staff Appointed C. H. Robertson of Greensboro, State Administrator, Defense Savings Staff, announces appoint ment of Julian B. Hester as the chairman of the Polk County com mitte. Other community leaders who have been asked to serve on this committee are W. E. Saw yer of Columbus,, C. M. Howes, J. T. Arledge, W. C. Ward and Seth M. Vining of Tryon, A. M. Salley and Mrs. Susan -Craig of Saluda. In announcing this new pro gram the Secretary of the Treas ury, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., said, “Defense Savings Bonds and Stamps give us all away to take direct part in building the de fense of our Country—an Ameri can Way to find the billions need ed for National Defense. The Uni ted States is today, as- it has al ways been, the best investment in the world. This is an oppor tunity for each citizen to buy a share in America.” The success of the Defense Savings program will be meas ured by the number of men, wo men and children who serve their country by saving. The Secretary of the Treasury has said repeat edly that his chief objective in this program is to spread the cost of defense as widely as pos sible among the American people.
