Organize Polk Cotton
Stamp Committee
Formation of a Cotton Samp
Commitee for Polk County to co
perate with the U. S. Department
of Agriculture in the operation
of the Supplementary Cotton
Stamp Plan in this area in the
relatively near future, was an
nounced today by J. A. Wilson,
county agricultural agent.
Jchn Cowan was elected chair
man of the committee. Other mem
bers representative of the Cotton
Trades Industry of Polk County,
included: B. L. Ballenger, Miss
Ophelia Shields and Tryon Bank
& Trust Company.
Mr. Wilson stated that the main
purpose of organizing the com
mittee was to assist the govern
ment in helping to acquaint all
retailers and wholesalers of cot
ton goods in the County with the
manner in which they could co
operate and participate in the
benefits of the program.
He added that on June 12th
at 7:30 o’clock in the court
house a mass meeting of all store
operators and their clerks, handl
ing cotton products would be held.
In stressing the importance of at
tending this meeting, Mr. Wilson
pointed out that merchants cannot
accept Cotton Stamps for redemp
tion by the government until they
have completed a “Retailers’
Statement” form entitling them to
participate. These forms are be
ing mailed to all merchants by
the County Agricultural Agent,

At Lanier Library
During the past two months the
library has received a number of
gifts. From Mr. and Mrs. Bur
chard came twenty-five books, a
number of them having the au
thor’s autographs, and several of
them inscribed to Mr. Burchard.
Among other gifts are the fol
lowing :

Mencken; Carillon music and
singing towers of the Old World
and the New, by Rice; Florida
sea shells, by Aldrich and Snyder;
Light from Bible prophecy as re
lated to the present crisis, by
Bauman; Mental engineering, by

Armstrong.
Other new additions are:

Os the 55 marriages recorded
in Spartanburg Probate Court
Last week two were for couples
in this section as follows:
William Moss, 22, and Doris
Jeanette Bridgeman, 18, both of
Tryon.
Grady Redford, 24, Mill Spring,
and Ruth Mooney, 18, of Spin
dale, N. C.
