Est. 1-31-28 Airplane Ambulance Fund Growing Steadily Polk County needed only $26.60 \at noon today to reach its goal v of $l5O asked cf us by Governor Broughton’s committee for the British Airplane Ambulance. The additional donors include Mrs. Homer Ellertson, Mr. and Mrs. Georgg A. Cathey, Miss Margery Strong, Mrs. A. M. Law, Miss Nancy McLeod, Mrs. Herbert Beck, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Lynch. The fund now stands at $123.40. Cclumbus, Saluda, White Oak and Green Creek haven’t been heard from and the chairman feels sure that the balance of $26.60 will be raised this weekend. Championship Rounds The first round and semi-final round matches will be held in the club championship at the Tryon Country club this weekend, gk Second flight matches will also be 7 played. The finals in both the championship and second flights will be held the weekend of July 26th. Players will please note that two rounds will be played this weekend in both flights. Adams-Millis No. 2 Splits Double-Header Adams-Millis No. 2 split a doubleheader at Adams-Millis ball park in softball on Thursday af ternoon. In the first game they lost to Adams-Millis No. 1 by the score of 7 to 6. In the fol lowing game they beat Soumerco bv the score of 5 to 4. Today the Kilcwatters will plav Soumer co at 6 on Harmon Field. $1.50 Year in the Carolinas FRIDAY, JULY 18, 1941 TRYON, N. C., C. J. Lynch Named Polk Co. Civil Defense Chairman Theodore S. Johnson of Raleigh, director of Civil Defense for North Carolina, has notified C. J. Lynch of Tryon that Governor Brough ton has appointed him to be chair man of the Polk County Council for Civil Defense. This council will cooperate locally with the government in all its phases of promoting national defense and will include the collection of alum inum, promote fire drills or any thing necessary. Chairman Lynch states that he is asking the may ors of Cclumbus, Saluda and Try on to be the chairman in their respective communities for the collection of aluminum, and Coun ty Commissioner Grover Feagan to represent the rest cf the coun ty. A county committee of about ten citizens will be named within a few days for other activities. The aluminum will be collected during next week. The aluminum collected will be put in the Tryon depository on Trade street. J. W. BEAUMONT John W. Beaumont, prominent Detroit lawyer, who also had a home in Tryon, died Thursday morning at his residence in De troit. Mr. Beaumont had not been to Tryon in over ten years on account of failing Health, but maintained his home here and an interest in all community affairs. Funeral services will be held Sat urday at 2:30 p. m., in Detroit. He is survived by his widow. The Beaumonts had been making Try on their winter home for about 20 years.
