Marion Palmer Wins Golf Championship At Tryon Marion Palmer won the club championship in the finals at the Tryon Country Club tournament held during the weekend.' He de feated Tommy Phipps 6 and 5. Palmer made a score of 76 and Phipps shot an 82. Palmer was three up on the 18th hole. This makes two championship titles won this month by Palmer who also took the annual Fourth of July tournament three weeks ago. Marry At Your Own Risk iSfeps General J. V. B. Metts -Chairman Julian B. Hiester of the Polk County Draft Board has received notice from General J. Van B. Metts, state director of Selective Service, that regis trants who get married on the eve of induction or after being ordered to report to the doctor fcr physical examination will do so at their own risk and will find that their marriage will not keep them out of the Army. The Russians say the German blitzkrieg has been halted and that the Nazis are having to dig trenches and resort to old time methods of fighting. 51.50 Year in the Carolinas TRYON, N. C., MONDAY JULY 28, 1941 Defense Council Members Invited To Asheville Chairman C. J. Lynch of the Polk County Council of Civil De fense states that all members of the local council are invited to go to Asheville on Wednesday, July 30th, at 11 a. m., at the Asheville city hall council cham ber to meet Theodore S. Johnson, State Director of Civil Defense. Chairman Lynch, K. A. Bowen, president of the Tryon Chamber of Commerce, Julian B. Hester, president of the Tryon Bank & Trust Company, are planning to attend the meeting and would be glad to . have other members see them and arrange for transpor tation to Asheville. Aluminum Wanted Here B 3" Tuesday Night C. J. Lynch, chairman of the Civil Defense Council states that he has received a request from the State headquarters to have all aluminum available in Polk Coun ty at the county depository in Tryon by Tuesday night, July 20th, in order to determine plans for shipping to larger centers. Mr. Lynch says if there are in dividuals or groups who haven’t means of transporting the alum inum, to notify him and he will get volunteers to go after it and bring it to the county depository between Kell and Blue Ridge * Weavers. Mayor Roy Baisden of Saluda and Mayor John Bur gess of Columbus will assist the collectors in their respective com munities. All other sources are also requested to get their metal to the county depository as quick ly as possible by Tuesday night.
