Hunter, presi dent of Western Carolina Teach ers College at Cullowhee, and gov ernor of the 1,90th District‘Rotary International, will be the chief speaker at the Tryon Rotary club on Friday at 1 p. m. at Sunny dale. The program will be in charge of Dr. M. C. Palmer. JUNIOR TOURNAMENT Two-ball mixed foursomes, nine holes, handicap, Thursday, Aug. 21, is the great day. The first Junior Tournament ever held at the Tryon Country Club will be on. Start your tournament career now. Choose a partner and come on out. Any one (whom we con sider a junior) is eligible. Larry will determine the handicaps. We will find, you a partner if you wish. So come out and play. Every one has an equal chance. Prizes for the first three places (and last). Entry fee 25c. H. (Getter-Uppers) WELLS SENTENCED AGAIN Leroy Wells, Tryon colored school principal, who was con victed last year in connection with the burning of the local school and who appealed, and was grant ed a new trial, was convicted this morning by a Rutherord county jury. Judge Phillips sentenced him to serve from 5 to 7 years in the state prison at Raleigh. He' has appealed again to a higher court, and is being held by Sher iff Hines pending the raising of a $4,000 bond. TRYON, N. C. t THURS., AUG. 21, 1941 CURB REPORTER Winston Churchill will speak on the radio Sunday afternoon at 3 p. m. EST and will probably give his version of the conference at sea with Roosevelt . . .Pat Gar nett who organized and directed the Tryon-Saluda band, has re signed from the Gaffney school to become band director of the Parker school at Grenville, S. C. Mr. Garnett’s hands have won state and district contests, and he has received wide recognition and much praise for his leadership . . . . His Tryon friends congratu late him ... In the news item about Miss Florence Cox publish ed on another page, the address should be Winton, N. C. . . The Cigarette Fund for Over-Seas still needs a few more subscribers to complete the blank sent here by headquarters. Donations for several hundred cigarettes came in this morning. Friends of the fighting soldiers want to send a complete list. Any amount of money will be accepted. . . . The Russians claim they are inflict ing heavy damage on the German army as it moves into Soviet ter ritory.
