All Continued on Back Page 51.50 Year in the Carolinas TRYON, N. C., FRIDAY, AUG. 22, 1941 COURT NEWS Polk County Superior Court had a busy session Thursday at Cclumbus. Pierce Miller, 19, colored was sentenced by Judge Don Phillips to not less than 12 nor more than 15 years for assault with intent to rape a married white woman of the Pea Ridge section. Miller was captured by officers about two Hours after the attack. He was hiidng in another Negro’s house. The prisoner was taken to Asheville for safe keeping. He will serve in the Central prison at Raleigh. The trial of Gary Copeland, of Greer, S. C., charged with “murder by drowning,” began on Thursday at 2:30 p. m. Witness es for the state had been put on the stand, and only a minor part of them was heard at the close of court. Copeland is charged by his father-in-law, Guy Taylor, with causing his son, George, to lose his life by knocking him into Lake Adger on Saturday night, June 21, during a fishing party. Adams-Millis No. 1 and Kilowatters Win In the first game of a double header at the Adams-Millis ball park on Thursday afternoon Ad ems-Millis No. 1 beat the Bird Hunters by the score of 4 to 3. In the second game th e Kilowat ters beat Adams-Millis No. 2 by the score of 7 to 2. Gov. Broughton reappointed A. J. Maxwell as commissioner of revenue for North Carolina.
