C., MONDAY, SEPT. 8, 1941 Chamber of Commerce Board To Meet On Tuesday 1 The Board of Directors of the r Trvon Chamber of Commerce will meet on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at the Chamber of Com merce office in the Hester building. Results of Flag Tournament At Country Club Robert Leighton won first place in the flag tournament held dur ing the weekend at the Tryon Country Club. He shot an 80 with a handicap of 14 which gave him a net of 86. H e had six shots left over and ended up near the green on No. 2. Birch Arledge was second with a score of 78-12- 66. He had six shots left over and ended up short of the branch on No. 2. Edward Sayre and Tommy Phipps tied for third k place. Sayre had a score of ' 74-6-68. He had four strokes and holed out on No. 1. Phipps with a score of 75-6-69 also holed out on No. 1 with the three shots he had left. There were 22 entries in the tournament. Methodist Society The Woman’s Missionary so ciety of the Methodist church will meet cn Tuesday night at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. W. A. Wilson and Miss Leila Dempsey. Klwanis Club Meets Tuesday Tryon Kiwanis club will meet on Tuesdav at 1 p. m., at Oak Hall Hotel. MRS. J. W. LANKFORD Mrs. Mary Hilton Lankford, 86. widow of the late J. W. Lankford, passed away early this morning after an illness of a few days. Mrs. Lankford was born and reared at the old home place near the Tryon Country Club. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 (DST) at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross. The Rev, C. P. Burnett will officiate. The deceased is survived by three sons, William Lankford of Everett, Washington, James and John Lankford of Tryon. A num ber of grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive. Polk Sailor at Sea Encounters Friend, But Misses Brother A. B. seaman Avery Lee Ed wards, Polk County sailor in the Maritime service, who was recent ly cited for bravery by the Mari time Commission for heroism in saving the lives of two men, has had some more unusual experi ences. Last week while helping transport some soldiers to Iceland he accidentally bumped into one of the passengers and when he turned to apologize discovered an old friend and classmate in Pri vate Harlan Mclntire of Colum bus who is now in the Army oc cupying Iceland. Seaman Edwards was not so fortunate some months ago when he helped transport some soldiers to Trinidad, British West Indes. His brother, Private Ruel Edwards was on board ship and neither knew of it.
